There was silence in the palliative care ward. Only the monitor tracking the heartbeat emitted rare signals — barely noticeable, like the breath of life fading away in the body of an 82-year-old man.

He had known his diagnosis for a long time: extensive metastases, irreversible changes; the doctors were honest — he had days, maybe hours left. But there was something that wouldn’t let him go — not the fear of death, but the pain of parting. Every day he looked out the window and whispered:
“Richie… Where are you, baby…”
Richie was his old, battered but loyal dog, whom he once picked up as a puppy by the roadside. They had been together for almost fifteen years — lost his wife, son, home, friends… Everything except each other.
That day, when the nurse came to change his IV drip, the elderly man suddenly grabbed her hand:
“Please let me see Richie… He’s alone… I can’t leave without hugging him.”
The nurse turned pale. Animals were not allowed in the ward. But something stirred in her chest. She went to the chief doctor. He looked at her like she was crazy:
“This is a hospital… But… if it’s his last wish…”
Two hours later, a quiet bark sounded near the hospital entrance. The dog was thin, with a graying muzzle.

The nurse opened the door to the room — and Richie, without hesitation, jumped onto the bed. He carefully lay down on his owner’s chest, resting his head on his shoulder.
The man whispered:
“Forgive me… Forgive me for not being there… My baby… Thank you…”
He cried, stroked the dog, kissed his head. And Richie only whined softly, as if saying, “I’m here. I’m with you. Until the end.”
They lay like that for several hours. The nurse decided not to disturb them and left the room. She finished her work and returned to the elderly patient. She opened the door to the room and screamed in horror 😨😢

When the nurse entered the room later in the evening, she froze in the doorway, her breath caught in her throat.
They were lying there just as before. Only the monitor was no longer beeping.
The elderly man had passed away… But in his embrace, with his nose buried in the man’s neck, lay Richie as well. The dog’s heart had not withstood the separation.
The last ones who had each other — left together. In silence. In love. In loyalty.
