It was an ordinary evening at a small grocery store on the corner of a busy street. A cat was sitting in front of the entrance — skinny, with dull fur, but with kind eyes full of constant worry.
She tucked in her paws, occasionally standing up to rub against the legs of passersby. People already knew her: many regularly brought her something to eat. Some would leave a piece of sausage, others — a slice of bread.
The cat accepted the food carefully, but not for herself alone: in a nearby abandoned shed, three hungry kittens were waiting for her. She brought them every single piece because their lives mattered more to her than her own.
That day, the cat arrived a bit earlier than usual and began meowing plaintively, trying to get the attention of customers. A few regulars threw her a sausage, and she skillfully caught the treat. People watched with fondness as she, without even finishing it herself, immediately carried the snack to her kittens. It seemed everyone felt sorry for the poor mother — everyone except one.
An older saleswoman had recently started working at the store. She was irritable and constantly displeased — convinced that stray animals ruined the store’s appearance and scared away customers. When she saw the cat return for another helping, she only scoffed in disdain.
“Back again, are you?” she muttered through gritted teeth.
And when the cat came closer, the woman thoughtlessly kicked her. The cat let out a pitiful cry and ran away.

At that moment, a young woman standing nearby saw everything. She often fed this cat and even wanted to take in one of the kittens. Horrified, she quickly took out her phone and recorded the entire incident on video.
“How can you not be ashamed!” she shouted at the saleswoman, but the woman only waved her hand angrily.
The young woman didn’t argue — she knew the video would speak far louder for her. Posting the clip on social media, she added a brief caption:
“This cat asks for food not for herself, but for her babies. Today, instead of help, she got kicked. Let everyone know the truth.”
The post instantly spread across city groups. People wrote angry comments and demanded punishment for the saleswoman.
The store owner, upon learning about the scandal, didn’t hesitate — he fired the saleswoman the very same day, not wanting the reputation of his establishment to suffer.
And the cat? Strangely enough, her story had a happy ending. After that video, many people wanted to help — some brought food, others paid for veterinary care, and one family even took her and her kittens home.
Now she had a place where she no longer had to beg for food or fear human cruelty. And Tamara remembered this lesson for a long time — that indifference and cruelty come with a price.
