Once upon a time, pit bulls were beloved members of American families and even earned the nickname “nanny dogs” for their gentleness and patience with children. Back then, they were considered one of the most reliable breeds for a home with little ones.

But times have changed — today these dogs are more often seen as aggressive and potentially dangerous, especially when it comes to interacting with children. Because of this prejudice, the number of pit bulls ending up in shelters exceeds that of any other breed. Sadly, many never find a new home — they are simply euthanized. And all because of myths surrounding these, in truth, kind-hearted and loyal animals.
Rocky — a three-year-old pit bull — is one of these dogs. Since October 2022, he has been in the care of Lollypop Farm, part of the Humane Society of Greater Rochester. His previous family gave him up, deciding they no longer wanted him to be part of their lives.
For a dog used to home comfort and human companionship, moving into shelter conditions was a real shock. It took him a long time to adjust to the new routine and the loneliness.

Since then, Rocky has found new owners twice. But both times he was brought back. The last time was in September — and since then, he has been living in the shelter once more, waiting every day for someone to open the door to a new life for him.
“He was returned in September, and since then we haven’t been able to find the right home for him. He’s a wonderful dog, but he needs a very specific type of family,”
shared Lindsey Brewer, public relations representative for the shelter, with Newsweek.
“He’ll do best in a home without other animals or children — exclusively with adults.”

The photograph of Rocky lying alone in his kennel evokes the strongest emotions. His gaze, full of longing and anticipation, goes straight to the heart. He is ready to start over, ready to give warmth and loyalty — but for now, the right family to give him a second chance hasn’t appeared.
Rocky’s story is an important reminder for everyone: no dog should ever be abandoned. Especially not dogs like him — kind, loving, and loyal to their last breath.
