On our wedding day, a gift from my mother-in-law shattered everything before our life together even had the chance to begin.
I met Daniel during our first year of college, and from the moment we crossed paths, we became inseparable. Everyone around us kept saying we were perfect for each other and that one day we would end up getting married.

At the time, I didn’t pay much attention to those comments because we were only friends, and I couldn’t imagine building a future with him. But as the years passed, our bond grew stronger, and eventually we started dating. In the end, he proposed to me, and I said yes without the slightest hesitation.
We chose to celebrate our wedding in a garden, just as I had dreamed of ever since I was a little girl.
When the big day finally arrived, it felt exactly like the fairytale I had always imagined. The garden was beautifully decorated with roses in all my favorite colors.
The ceremony itself was small and intimate, attended only by our immediate families and a few close friends. But despite the beauty of the moment, a present from my mother-in-law ruined everything, destroying our marriage before it had even truly begun.
He untied the ribbon with an almost boyish grin. Around us, the guests held their breath, entertained by the unexpected moment. I tightened my grip on my bouquet, curious to see what was inside. My mother-in-law, however, watched everything with a strange intensity, as though every second mattered.
The lid slowly lifted.
Inside, there was no priceless keepsake or sentimental gift. Only a thick envelope resting in the center.
Daniel glanced at me before opening it, still smiling. But the expression vanished almost instantly.
His face changed completely.
“What is this?” I whispered.
He didn’t answer right away. His eyes moved across the pages inside, line after line, as if he were trying to convince himself he wasn’t seeing the truth. Then he looked up at his mother.
“Is this some kind of joke?”

A heavy silence settled over the garden.
My mother-in-law slightly tilted her head, calm and almost emotionless. “You deserved to know before starting a life with her.”
My chest tightened. “Know what?”
Daniel stepped back as though I had suddenly become a stranger to him. Without meeting my eyes, he handed me the documents. My hands shook as I took them.
They were printed copies of messages. Conversations. My name was everywhere.
But it wasn’t me.
Someone had used my identity, my photos, and my name to communicate with several men. The messages were intimate, disturbing, and carefully designed to make it appear as though I had been living a secret double life.
“That’s not me…” I whispered.
No one said a word.
The looks around me had changed. Doubt was spreading slowly but surely. Even Daniel… especially Daniel.
“Now you understand why I did this,” his mother continued. “A family has to be protected.”
I stared at her, searching for any crack in her story, any sign that she was blatantly lying. But she remained perfectly composed. Too composed.
“You fabricated all of this,” I said, my voice trembling.
She didn’t deny it.

Daniel closed his eyes, overwhelmed by the weight of everything happening. “I need time.”
Those words hurt more than anything else.
It wasn’t rejection. It wasn’t support either. It was distance.
And suddenly, I found myself standing alone in the middle of my own wedding.
One by one, the guests began drifting away, as if the scene had become too uncomfortable to witness. The sun was still shining, the roses remained untouched, yet everything already felt ruined.
I left without looking back.
Three days later, the truth finally came out.
One of the men involved admitted the deception. He had never actually spoken to me. He had been manipulated by a fake profile carefully created by someone who knew every detail of my life.
The evidence led directly to her.
Daniel came back to me with red eyes and a broken voice. At last, he understood everything.
But something inside me had already shattered.
“Why didn’t you trust me?” I asked him.
He had no answer.
And that was the moment I realized the truth.
It wasn’t the gift that destroyed our marriage.
It was his doubt.
