“Which one of these women is your mother?” the judge asked the little boy.
But his answer made both women cry out in shock, and the entire courtroom fell into complete silence…

Just moments earlier, the courtroom had been filled with chaos. The two women were practically shouting over each other, their voices breaking through tears and desperate pleas.

It was as if they had forgotten where they were. All they could see was the young boy standing at the microphone with his head lowered.

The blonde woman in the dark burgundy dress was the first to lose control.
—I gave birth to him! I’ve been searching for him for nearly ten years!

Her hands trembled as she wiped away her tears, yet she kept talking nonstop, as though even a second of silence might cause her to lose him all over again.

Beside her stood a woman dressed in black, one hand pressed against her chest as if she could barely breathe.
—And where were you all those years?… she whispered.

—I was there when he was sick. I was there when he cried himself to sleep at night, when he was terrified to go to school. He’s my son not because of blood… but because of the life we shared together.

A heavy murmur spread across the courtroom.

During the hearing, it was revealed that years earlier, the boy’s biological mother had given him up because, at only eighteen years old, she couldn’t afford to feed him or provide him with a stable life. He had later been adopted by another family.

That was the home where he grew up loved and cared for, never imagining that one day his entire world would be torn apart.

But now, both women were willing to destroy each other for the right to stand beside him.

The judge slowly removed his glasses and looked at the boy with exhaustion in his eyes.
—Tommy… who do you consider to be your mother?

Tommy slowly raised his head. His eyes were red—not from hysteria, but from the kind of exhaustion adults carry after enduring far too much pain.

For several long seconds, he said nothing, looking first at one woman, then the other.

Then he spoke so quietly it was barely audible.

—Neither of them, Your Honor…

It felt as though every sound in the courtroom had suddenly vanished.

The blonde woman collapsed onto the bench as if her legs had given out beneath her. The other woman stood frozen, mouth hanging open, unable to process what she had just heard.

But the real shock was still to come.

Because Tommy’s next words left even the judge speechless…

Tommy stayed quiet for a long time, staring down at the floor between his shoes. The courtroom was so silent that people could hear someone in the back row nervously tapping their fingers against the wooden bench.

Finally, the boy took a soft breath.

—You both keep talking about how much you love me… —his voice shook now, though no longer from fear.— But have either of you ever stopped to ask how I feel?

Both women looked at him in silence.

—From the very beginning, all you’ve done is fight with each other. You scream. You cry. You pull me apart like I’m some kind of possession…

He swallowed hard before continuing.

—But if you truly love someone, can you really hurt them this much?

One of the women covered her mouth with her hand. The biological mother slowly lowered her head.

—You keep calling it love, —Tommy continued,— but sometimes it feels like that love is only about what you want. Meanwhile, I’ve been terrified this entire time. I never wanted to choose between you.

At last, he looked at one woman, then the other.

—I love both of you… and that’s exactly why I can’t choose either one.

The adoptive mother’s shoulders began to shake with emotion. The biological mother cried quietly too, but this time there was no anger, no desperation, no fight left in her tears.

For the first time during the entire hearing, the women stopped staring at each other and looked instead at the boy standing between them.

And in that moment, they finally realized how blinded they had become trying to “win” his love. Tommy didn’t need to make a choice. He didn’t need a battle. He needed a family.

The judge gave both women time to speak privately outside the courtroom.

An hour later, they returned in silence—without accusations, without hostility.

The adoptive mother spoke first.

—Tommy should stay in his home. His friends are there… his school… his whole life.

The other woman slowly nodded.

—And I… I only want the chance to be part of his life, if he’ll allow it.

For the first time all day, Tommy lifted his eyes without fear.

And in that moment, everyone understood something important:

Sometimes love isn’t about fighting to keep someone. Sometimes it’s about finally stopping the pain you cause them.
