Every morning before my husband left the house, he handed me a mysterious white pill and watched closely to make sure I swallowed it. Then, one day, I only pretended to take it and secretly brought it to a laboratory for testing. When I learned what it really was, it felt as though the floor had vanished beneath my feet…

I married for love, convinced that a wonderful life together was waiting for us. My husband had always appeared gentle, composed, and incredibly thoughtful. Before our wedding, he had never raised his voice at me. He often surprised me with romantic gestures and constantly said he wanted to spend the rest of his life by my side.
But everything changed the morning after our wedding.
When I woke up, my husband was already dressed and preparing to leave for work. He stood beside the bed holding a glass of water and a small white tablet.
“Good morning. Please take this.”
“What is it?”
“Just some medication. You need to take it every day.”
I tried to ask for more details, but he simply smiled and repeated:
“Trust me. It’s important.”
I shrugged and swallowed the pill.
The same thing happened the following morning.
And the morning after that.
Before long, it became an unsettling daily routine. Every morning, my husband brought me another white pill, stood there until I swallowed it, and then asked me to open my mouth.
“Let me see your tongue.”
“Are you serious? You don’t trust me?”
“I just need to be certain you actually took it.”
Only after checking would he calmly leave for work.
But that was not the end of his strange behavior.
Every afternoon at exactly two o’clock, my phone would ring.
“Are you home?”
“Yes.”
“You haven’t gone anywhere?”
“No.”
“Good. I’ll be home soon.”
The call never lasted longer than a minute. As soon as I answered his questions, he hung up.
This continued for several weeks.
At first, I assumed he was simply jealous. Later, I convinced myself that he was the kind of person who needed to control every detail.
Sometimes, I even wondered whether he was terrified of losing me.
But as the days passed, his actions became increasingly disturbing.

Why would he never tell me what the pills were? Why did he become so anxious whenever I was even a few minutes late?
And why did he call me at precisely the same time every single day?
Eventually, I decided I had to uncover the truth.
That morning began like all the others.
My husband handed me the pill.
“Take it.”
I pretended to swallow it, took a sip of water, and opened my mouth for him to inspect.
He examined me carefully, nodded with approval, and left for work.
The moment the door closed behind him, I removed the pill I had hidden inside my cheek, wrapped it in a tissue, and slipped it into my purse.
An hour later, I arrived at a private testing laboratory.
“I need to know what this medication contains,” I quietly told the technician.
“Of course. The results should be available in a few days.”
Those days seemed to drag on forever. I tried to behave normally and continued pretending to take the pills, but the fear inside me grew stronger with each passing hour.
Horrifying possibilities raced through my mind.
Perhaps my husband was slowly poisoning me.
Maybe he was intentionally trying to weaken me.
Or perhaps he wanted to damage my memory and make me completely dependent on him.
But the laboratory results revealed something far more terrifying than anything I had imagined.
At last, the laboratory called.
With a knot in my stomach, I went to collect the results.
The doctor studied the paperwork for several minutes before finally looking up at me.
“How long have you been taking this medication?”
“Almost every day since I got married.”
“Who prescribed it?”
“My husband.”
The doctor remained quiet for a moment.
“This is a powerful drug typically prescribed to patients with a serious psychiatric condition. Medication like this should never be stopped abruptly without medical supervision.”
A chill spread through my entire body.
“But… I’ve never had any illness like that.”

The doctor watched me closely.
“Are you certain?”
I nodded without saying a word.
He let out a deep sigh.
“Then you need to speak with the psychiatrist overseeing your treatment. According to these records, you’ve been receiving care for quite some time.”
I was completely confused.
What psychiatrist?
What medical records?
What was he talking about?
That same evening, I went to the address the laboratory had provided.
An older doctor spent a long time reviewing my file before speaking in a calm voice.
“I always suspected that one day you would come here by yourself.”
“Please tell me what is happening.”
He opened a thick folder packed with documents.
“Several years ago, you developed a severe psychiatric disorder following a deeply traumatic event. During your episodes, you lost complete control of your behavior and had no memory of what happened afterward. That is why, from your perspective, the illness seemed as though it had never existed.”
I sat frozen in silence.
“That can’t be true…”
“Unfortunately, it is. After several months of treatment, your condition improved considerably. However, stopping the medication could have put you in serious danger. Your husband agreed to take responsibility for ensuring that you took it every day.”
I could barely process what I was hearing.
“And the phone calls every afternoon?”
“Those were recommended by your doctors as well. Whenever your condition began to worsen, you could not be left alone for extended periods. He wasn’t calling because he was jealous or controlling. He was checking to make sure you were safe.”
I returned home with tears filling my eyes.
For an entire month, I had convinced myself that my husband was a controlling tyrant who wanted to take away my independence.
But all that time, he had quietly been honoring a promise he had once made to my doctors.
That evening, the moment my husband stepped into the apartment, he could tell from my expression that I had discovered the truth.
He slowly sat down next to me.
“You went to the clinic?”
I nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me everything from the beginning?”
He lowered his gaze.
“Because the doctors warned me that learning the truth all at once might be too overwhelming for you. They hoped your memories would gradually return over time. I never wanted to lie to you, but I was even more afraid of losing you.”
I remained silent for a long time.
Then, for the first time in weeks, I reached for the pill on the table and picked it up myself.
“Now I understand why you did all of this.”
He pulled me into his arms and held me tightly.
