The ship’s captain flew into a rage when he discovered one of the crew members reading a sacred book on board. In a burst of cruelty, he shoved the man into shark-infested waters. But the captain could never have predicted how his heartless decision would eventually come back to haunt him.

At first, the ocean appeared peaceful that day. A massive cargo vessel moved steadily across the open sea, surrounded by endless blue water that stretched all the way to the horizon.

The sun blazed overhead with such intensity that the ship’s metal hull had grown dangerously hot. The crew worked quickly, eager to complete their duties before the heat became unbearable.

Among them was a man named Samir.

He was quiet, poor, and exceptionally hardworking. Most of the crew barely noticed him because he never argued, never complained, and always accepted the most difficult assignments. He scrubbed the decks, hauled heavy crates, cleaned the rust-stained sides of the vessel, and carried out every order he was given.

That afternoon, Samir completed his responsibilities ahead of the others. He inspected the fastenings, returned the tools to their proper places, washed down part of the deck, and only then lowered himself beside the short railing.

From his pocket, he carefully removed a small, weathered sacred book and began reading in silence.

To Samir, it was far more than an ordinary book.

His mother had given it to him many years earlier, just before he left home to work at sea for the first time.

On the opening page, she had written a message in her own handwriting:

“When fear finds you, read these words and remember that you are never alone.”

Samir softly traced his fingers across the faded cover before reading in a voice barely louder than a whisper. For a moment, even in the middle of the vast and lonely ocean, he felt as though something warm and familiar remained beside him.

Then the captain spotted him from across the deck.

The captain was a harsh, intimidating man who enjoyed being feared. He frequently yelled at the crew, humiliated workers in front of everyone, and believed that men with little money had no right to speak unless they were following orders.

He marched toward Samir with heavy footsteps and stopped directly in front of him.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he demanded. “I don’t pay you to sit around reading.”

Samir immediately rose to his feet.

“I’ve already completed my work, Captain,” he replied calmly. “I inspected everything and cleaned my entire section.”

The captain gave him a mocking grin.

“Completed it? Then you clearly haven’t searched hard enough for something else to do.”

Without warning, he ripped the book from Samir’s hands.

“Please don’t touch that,” Samir pleaded, fear entering his voice. “It’s the only keepsake I have from my mother.”

The captain ignored him. He raised the book, examined its worn cover, and curled his lip in disgust.

“There’s no room for nonsense like this on my ship.”

With that, he swung his arm and hurled the book over the railing.

Samir stood completely still.

He watched the small, dark book drop into the sea, bob on the waves for several seconds, and then slowly drift away with the current.

“Why would you do that?” he asked, his voice shaking.

The captain simply shrugged.

“Go clean the outside of the ship. Apparently, you have plenty of spare time.”

Samir tightened his fists. For the first time since joining the crew, he looked the captain directly in the eyes.

“You had no right to do that. It was the only thing I had left from my mother.”

Several nearby workers stopped what they were doing and turned toward them. No one had ever expected the soft-spoken Samir to challenge the captain.

The captain’s face flushed red with fury.

“So now you think you can talk back to me?”

He stepped closer.

“Then go retrieve your precious book yourself. You can join it down there with the sharks.”

At first, Samir did not understand what he meant.

Then the captain suddenly drove both hands into his chest.

Samir stumbled backward, struck his leg against the low railing, and tumbled over the side with a scream.

“Samir!” one of the crew members shouted.

The ocean swallowed him.

A few seconds later, he broke through the surface, coughing and desperately struggling to breathe.

That was when everyone saw the sharks.

They had already begun circling the ship. Several enormous gray shapes glided beneath the surface, while sharp dorsal fins slowly closed in around Samir.

Chaos erupted on deck.

“Throw him a life preserver!” someone yelled.

A young sailor rushed toward the emergency ring, but the captain grabbed him firmly by the shoulder.

“Stop!” he thundered. “No one throws anything overboard without my command.”

“They’re going to rip him apart!” the sailor cried.

The captain stared down at the water without a trace of emotion.

“He should have known better than to challenge me.”

Samir used the last of his strength to keep his head above the surface.

Then something happened that left every person on the ship staring in complete disbelief.

Samir saw the fins cutting through the water and the dark shapes moving beneath him. He knew he had only moments left.

Then, rising on a nearby wave, he saw his book.

It had not sunk.

Samir stretched out his arm, seized it, and pressed it tightly against his chest, as though he were not holding a soaked bundle of pages, but his mother’s hand.

At that exact moment, something extraordinary occurred.

The sharks suddenly stopped closing in.

They continued circling him, but none of them attacked. One massive shark swam so close that it nearly brushed against his leg. Then, without warning, it turned and moved away.

The crew stood frozen on the deck, watching in terror and disbelief.

“Why aren’t they attacking him?” someone whispered.

The captain had gone pale as well, but he tried to pretend that nothing unusual was happening.

“It’s only a coincidence,” he muttered.

Then the distant roar of an engine broke through the tension.

A small patrol boat was speeding toward the cargo ship. One of the crew members had managed to send out an emergency signal before the captain could prevent anyone from calling for help.

Within minutes, the rescue team reached Samir.

One officer extended a long rescue pole toward him while another tossed a life ring into the water. Samir was barely able to keep himself afloat, but he still managed to grab the ring without releasing the drenched sacred book.

When the rescuers pulled him aboard the patrol boat, he was ghostly pale, shaking uncontrollably, and almost too weak to speak.

The patrol officers then boarded the cargo vessel and immediately demanded to know who was responsible for the crew’s safety.

The captain stepped forward and forced a nervous smile.

“It was an accident,” he claimed. “The worker lost his footing and fell overboard.”

But before he could say anything else, the young sailor stepped forward.

“No,” he said clearly. “The captain pushed him.”

A second crew member spoke up.

“Before that, he threw Samir’s book into the ocean.”

Then a third added,

“And afterward, he ordered us not to throw him a life preserver.”

The captain spun toward them.

“Be quiet!” he yelled. “I am your captain!”

But his authority no longer frightened anyone.

One of the patrol officers raised his radio and reported the incident. The captain was immediately relieved of command, and when the ship later reached port, authorities took him away for a formal investigation.

Samir remained in the hospital for several days.

He survived, though even he could not fully explain how. The doctors called it an incredible miracle because the sharks had come dangerously close to him.

As soon as he was strong enough, Samir carefully dried the soaked sacred book one page at a time.
